Scariest Hospital Risks

Filed under: Healing — hygienehealth @ 1:57 pm

This is a repost from Forbes.com.

There is a grim joke that circulates among medical residents: Hospitals are terrible places for sick people.

Truth is, for all the life-saving miracles unfolding each day at modern hospitals–from cancer chemotherapy to heart bypass surgery–they are also filled with danger.

“It’s human frailty,” says Carol Haraden, a vice president at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, which several years ago started an effort to reduce the toll from medical mistakes. “If you’ve got humans involved you’re going to have errors. You just have to build a system that is going to prevent as many as possible.”

Plenty get through. There are some 100,000 people who get potentially deadly infections during hospital treatment, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Infected incisions are particularly dangerous as hospital germs are more likely to be resistant to antibiotics that doctors use to kill them off.

Worse, between 40,000 and 100,000 people die every year because of doctors’ mistakes, including surgical mishaps and drug mix-ups. One big problem: Hospital patients may get the wrong drug one time out of five, according to a study by Auburn University. The death toll from mistakes is at least as bad as that from car accidents or breast cancer, and maybe as bad as that from strokes.

In one widely reported case, comedian Dana Carvey was the victim of a botched heart bypass operation; his doctor operated on the wrong artery. (The problem was fixed in a second procedure.) The wife of a patient whose brain was damaged in a car accident wrote in the journal Health Affairs about how a misplaced catheter and a blood clot led to the amputation of her husband’s hand. Haraden herself, the medical-error expert, says that when she went to the hospital for breast cancer surgery, doctors almost operated on the wrong breast. (The mistake was caught before any operating was done.)

Managing these risks often comes down to persistent attention to detail–by caregivers, patients and their advocates. One study showed doctors only washed their hands 44% of the time, if nobody was looking. If they knew they were being watched, 61% washed up–still way too low.

At least we’re making better ground on pneumonia. Born of bacteria that collect and live in ventilator machines that keep patients breathing, these potential killers were once accepted as a cost of doing business. Today hyper-vigilant hospitals have managed to go months or years without a case of ventilator pneumonia.

Germ-fighting fixes include inclining patients’ beds, disinfecting their mouths and using drugs to prevent ulcers that could cause stomach bacteria to infiltrate the lungs. At Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center in Ohio, such steps resulted in a 90% reduction in ventilator pneumonia.

Another fix is to smooth out the massive volatility in patient traffic. A sudden flood of patients leads to all sorts of complications–from careless mistakes brought on by sleep deprivation, to patients getting treated for one condition by nurses who specialize in another.

Oddly–or sadly–enough, overcrowding in hospitals is actually the result not of sudden infectious outbreaks, but of the inefficient way surgeons book their operating rooms, says Eugene Litvak, a Boston University operations management expert. Urgent cases, like broken limbs, come in a steady stream. It’s actually operations scheduled months ahead of time that cause overcrowding.

“It is easier for practically every hospital to predict when somebody will break their leg than when someone will schedule surgery,” Litvak lamented to Forbes in April. “God doesn’t make people sicker on Tuesday than Wednesday. We do.”

Is Protein Important?

Filed under: Diet — hygienehealth @ 10:29 pm

This is a very popular topic today. Everybody who you tell that you are eating a non-animal based diet will return with this comment; “where do you get your protein from?”. There is a big misconception that humans need to consume a large part of their diet as protein. This is simply untrue and is contrary to the scientific evidence.

There are weight lifters and body builders who are currently consuming protein supplements made from many kinds of protein. Some are made from eggs, milk protein which is better known as whey, soy, or many other sources. These products for the most part are extremely acid forming and will cause the body to actually remove calcium from the bones and muscles. The amount of protein really needed for an average healthy adult are in the range of 6 to 10 percent of calories.

Adults require much less protein than a rapidly growing baby and mother’s milk which is the food that nature has created for them is at most 5 to 6 percent protein by calories. There is no evidence whatsoever that an adult will ever need more than that. If you eat the foods that nature has created for us, the fruits and vegetables with the odd nut or seed, and get sufficient calories to maintain your weight you will be getting enough protein.

This is not only a scientific fact but there is a lot of anecdotal evidence as well. There are many vegans who have been living a lifestyle with little or no protein in their diet except the protein that is already in fruits and vegetables who compete in endurance and strength competitions who surpass the ones who consume more protein than the body needs. Here is a link to a study that concludes that a vegan diet is better for bones (link)

Protein is used by the body but in a small quantities. The most important nutrient for humans is carbohydrates. Every cell in our body uses carbohydrates as a fuel. The most efficient form for our cells is in the form of fruit sugars.

If there is not enough carbohydrates coming in from fruits the body will attempt to convert proteins and fats to carbohydrates. This conversion is very inefficient and energy consuming. It also creates a lot of metabolic waste products that must be eliminated from the body. Protein is way overrated and in fact should be avoided if you would like to maintain good health.

Laser Eye Correction

Filed under: Exercise — hygienehealth @ 8:52 pm

This is a topic that you will rarely see (pun intended) displayed openly. People have been concerned with their vision for years. They used glasses for decades and decades. Just a few years ago the contact lens was invented and it freed glasses wearers from having to put up with an object on their face to help them see. They didn’t stop people from being forced to having to wear something in front of their eyes, but these little eyeball stickers were all the rage. People were not only able to appear to be not wearing any glasses but they can also change the color of their eyes. People became creative with these contact lenses and started to invent new versions of them all the time.

There are ones that can be worn for only a short time and then thrown away, some designs can be worn a long time as much as several months and then reused again and everything in between. There are different materials being used as well as different colors and for different purposes such as reading and distance vision improvement. What have these great new inventions really improved anyway? Not much except the ability to appear to be naked eyed when in reality you are using a lens to do the work that your eye muscles are too lazy to do. In fact as with glasses, when someone wears contact lenses for a while they find that they need to get stronger and stronger prescriptions.

The reason for this is because the muscles of the eyes need to be used in order for them to continue to work correctly. This is the same for any other muscle in the body, if you do not use it, it will eventually stop working as it was originally intended to work. If you simply accept the fact that your eye muscles are no longer going to function and wear glasses or contact lenses they will assure you that they will no longer function. Once your eye muscles adjust to the new prescription glasses or contact lenses you will eventually notice that your vision will get worse. These muscles now have even less to do and will shrink in size and become less able to correct your vision. Your vision is completely controlled by the muscles that are behind your eyeballs.

Seeing is nothing more than exercising muscles. These muscles are not voluntarily controlled by our cognitive brain like our arm and leg muscles but they are muscles that do react to certain stimuli. With glasses and contact lenses there is always the ability to change prescriptions as we allow the eye muscles to become more and more atrophic and we require higher and higher prescriptions. This is almost a guarantee as the use of lenses to help the eye muscles is like using a wheelchair to walk.

If you stopped walking with your legs for a few months and used a wheelchair your leg muscles will start losing strength and soon they will lose the ability to even support your own weight. If you did this for years and years you eventually will have trouble to even stand on your legs.

Only about 15 to 20 years ago a new technology was invented. Originally it was an operation on the eye lens using a very sharp knife or blade that would sculpture your eyeball lens to the correct prescription for your glasses or contact lenses. Then more recently the technique was improved to use lasers. Now these procedures are performed thousands or even hundreds of thousands of times a year. People will go to have laser surgery on their eyes to shape the lens to be the same as their contact lenses or glasses.

The only problem here is that the problem is nothing to do with the lens of the eyeball. The problem with people’s sight is the eye muscles that control the focusing of the eye. These muscles are not being used enough and start to become atrophic. How can a problem with muscles ever be fixed by changing a perfect eyeball lens? Just as the person who wears contact lenses or glasses  will eventually need a different (stronger) prescription in time, so will the person who gets the laser surgery on his or her eyes.

The problem was not being addressed at all, instead a perfectly normal and good eyeball lens was destroyed with a laser with the hope that the muscles which control the eye vision stop deteriorating. Chances are the muscles will continue to deteriorate because changing the lens of the eyeball is not any different from using contact lenses or glasses. This means that there will be a point in time when everybody who had this destructive surgery will either require it again to destroy their eye some more or they will need to wear some other lens in front of the destroyed eyeball lens.

They will have to either wear glasses again or contact lenses (probably the former as the contact lens needs to be worn on the eyeball and the eyeballs were destroyed by lasers). Another issue that is at play here is the fact that the measurement of your eyesight can change as often as every few minutes. This is especially true with astigmatism, if you suffer from astigmatism you most often will get different readings at different times of the day. This is dependent on many factors such as your mood, your nutrition, the light, and others. This is so because the muscles that cause astigmatism can be tensed or relaxed just like any other muscle in your body.

If you have your eyeball lenses permanently destroyed according to the measurement at 1 p.m. by 3 p.m. you will need to have them destroyed further to compensate for the change in your muscles. The entire optical and eye surgery industry is a complete farce. There are much much better ways to improve your sight without destroying perfectly functioning eyeball lenses. For more information on these methods look up the bates method (http://www.iblindness.org/books/bates/) or (http://www.altguide.com/therapy/info/bates.html) or check this site out: (http://www.eyerobics.com.au/index.html).

Healing Chronic Digestive Problems

Filed under: Healing — hygienehealth @ 5:14 pm

If you have been diagnosed with one of the popular chronic digestive disorders such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) also known as ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or any other disease that affects the digestive tract you can easily heal yourself without any medications, surgeries, herbs, supplements or other unnatural therapies.

Most of you who are reading this will be surprised to know that all humans have a complete digestive system that is meant to function correctly if it is treated correctly, in other words having a disease of the digestive system is not normal and is always caused by abuse of our body. This abuse is due to years and years of consuming inappropriate food. Many people think they eat a good diet or even an acceptable diet but it probably is extremely far from what a real healthy diet actually is.

Eventhough we can consume almost anything, the digestive system in our body can only tolerate certain foods. In fact the digestive system performs best when it receives the best food and has problems when any other food is consumed. The best foods for the digestive system are those that are soft, easily digested, do not take much energy to digest, and contain large amounts of useable nutrients. This defines almost all of the natural foods that grow on this planet.

What I mean by natural foods is that these foods have not been altered from the original form that they had when they grew. If a fruit is picked at it’s peak ripeness it falls into this catagory. In fact fruit is the best food for a human digestive system. It contains many many nutrients in their most useable state and is extremely easy to digest. In fact if eaten alone and a long time after any less digestible food, fruit will digest very easily and quicky.

Try to eat a ripe fruit such as a watermelon first thing in the morning and you will find that your body has finished digesting the melon within minutes. The proof of this is how quickly you will start to feel hunger again after eating it. The reason why you feel hungry so soon after the melon is because your stomach has removed it’s contents into the lower bowels. Most likely you will need to use the restroom also soon after eating the melon. This is because the digestive system is done with digestion, the nutrients were absorbed and the waste products are ready for elimination.

This is the way the digestive system is designed to work. The heavy starches that most people eat such as rice, beans, pasta, cereal, etc. will give the feeling of fullness for a long time, which means that they remain in the digestive system a long time and are therefore not a food that is good for a healthy digestive system. Eating healthy food leads to a healthy digestive system.

If you have one of the chronic digestive problems mentioned above you can heal it quite easily by following the laws of nature. Nature has given us so many ripe nutritious foods but instead of eating them we resort to unnatural and chemical filled artificial foods which the masses eat. If you stop eating these unnatural foods and change to a natural food diet you will see your chronic condition go away.

The best way to do this is to take some time off from your usual daily routine and stay home for a week or two with a house full of ripe fruit. Many of you will be saying that your doctor said that you need to stay away from raw fruit and vegetables. There is some truth in this because there is fiber in fruits and vegetables and a flaring digestive system can not handle fiber very well. If you have trouble eating fruit because you are in a flare then you will need to fast on water for a few days to correct the flare.

This can be done with a fasting specialist either at home or at a fasting retreat. After the flare is resolved you should start the fruit diet and spend a lot of time resting. Once your digestive system is healed you will see the tremendous results that a simple diet can do. You will feel better in many ways and will no longer need to use drugs, supplements, herbs or undergo surgery. It is a shame when I see the number of people who needlessly suffer from these conditions when the relief is so simple.

Vaccinations

Filed under: Healing — hygienehealth @ 12:22 pm

I have covered several topics related to health and natural hygiene such as supplements, drugs, food, etc. but many people believe that vaccinations are necessary and help to prevent diseases. There can’t be anything more incorrect than this belief.

Vaccines do not prevent disease and often cause much worse problems to people than the diseases they were supposed to prevent. In fact there are many documented cases of people still getting the very same disease that these vaccines were supposed to prevent after getting the vaccine. The theory behind vaccines is that a weakened or even dead version of a bacteria or virus is injected into the body so that the so called immune system can get an opportunity to produce antibodies to the virus and therefore have a collection of defense mechanisms to fight any real virus or bacteria that might be exposed to the body in the future.

The problem with this theory is that bacterium and viruses are not the cause of disease but they are the life forms that actually clean up after we get sick due to our own bad lifestyle habits. It is like claiming that a pile of garbage is caused by flies, when in reality the flies are attracted to the pile of garbage because they eat the dead and rotting matter that is contained in the garbage pile.

The same holds for diseases, the bacteria and virus are attracted to the body when there is dead cell matter and waste products in the body. These life forms consume these products and will be attracted to a body that has them available. Besides this fact the vaccine itself is full of toxic substances many of which are known carcinogens (see: http://www.healthfullivingintl.org/articles/flushot.html ). Your body will need to breakdown and eliminate these toxins and therefore make your elimination systems work even harder than they were working before the vaccine was injected.

There are vaccines to prevent many diseases, all are considered a miracle by the pharmaceutical companies. Some miracle! The only miracle they create is the miracle of excessive wealth to the officers and executives of the pharmaceutical companies. The unfortunate victims are the payers and receivers of these vaccines who assume they are protected from some kind of disease and therefore can continue to abuse themselves with extremely unhealthy living. Eventually this will lead to much worse problems.

The best way to avoid illnesses and prevent infections is to live a healthy lifestyle with all the factors that are described on this weblog. Eat well, get rest, sleep, get enough sunshine, have a positive outlook on life and do what makes you feel happy every day. This will assure you a healthy life. If your past abuses were so bad that you are full of toxins you might need to fast for a while to allow your body to remove them.

If you consult with a fasting specialist they can guide you through. Do not accept vaccines at any cost, if the school or government is forcing you to have them there are forms available to refuse them. Get these forms submitted to the agency that is requiring the vaccine and do not accept them.
